Born and raised in the Autumn of New England, Andrew Rosen is a cellist whose musical endeavors have taken him to Chicago, Napa Valley, Germany, and beyond. Andrew's fascination with the cello began at the age of nine and shortly after he began intensive study with cellist and pedagogue Terry King. Andrew received his B.M. in Cello Performance from the DePaul University School of Music under the guidance and instruction of Stephen Balderston. He then went on to receive his M.M in Cello Performance from The Hartt School, studying with Mihai Tetel. Andrew has also worked closely with cellist, Alan Rafferty.
Andrew has performed music across a broad spectrum ranging from Classical, Rock, to Avant-Garde. Andrew was a founding member of the free-improvisation ensemble, Eunuch Tunic, and has performed with Rock Opera band, The Dead Superheroes Orchestra. Currently, Andrew is a core member of Divina Strings, New England's premier wedding music ensemble.
Andrew has performed in masterclasses for esteemed cellists Matt Haimovitz and Steven Isserlis, as well as for violinist, Violaine Melançon. Andrew has also attended various music festivals including the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival, and the prestigious Festival Napa Valley Music Academy. He performs often with the Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra as well as the CT Lyric Opera Orchestra.
In addition to performing, Andrew is also an avid teacher. Andrew is currently Cello Teaching Artist at Bravo Waterbury! An El Sistema-inspired intensive after school music program. He is also resident cello instructor at various elite Connecticut private schools including The Westminster School, The Rectory School, and The Suffield Academy. Andrew also maintains a private cello studio. He plays on a 2013 cello made by Connecticut native, Edward Kaftan.
What began as a deep passion for performing has over the years developed into a love and dedication for teaching. Every student is different in how they learn, how they hear, and how they grasp both musical and technical ideas and concepts. With this in mind, I treat each and every student as an individual and seek to craft a plan optimized for the success of said student. Fundamentals are the key to progress. Many beginning musicians are in a rush to play challenging music without a basic foundation, like a sailor jumping into a boat without any oars. In my studio, I seek to instill such a foundation through practical methods of establishing tension free playing and clean intonation, all while progressing towards an effortless navigation of the instrument. I also believe that every musician, regardless of ability, has their own voice. Music is a language, it allows us to express what words cannot. I encourage my students to discover their voice and cultivate the tools needed to express it through their instrument. All of this is accomplished in a fun, thoughtful, and rewarding learning environment.
